FOLLOWING JESUS

Following Jesus Slider

Have you ever wondered what it was like for Jesus’ disciples? Have you ever wished you could experience what they experienced?

Now you can! Starting April 27th, Second Chance Church will begin a journey that is like nothing you have ever experienced before. We are going to walk step-by-step with Jesus through his life and ministry.

Doesn’t it make sense that if we are going to follow him, if we are going to invest our lives in him, then maybe we should know him a little better than we do? We will take our time and find out:

  • Who was Jesus, really?
  • What did he really teach?
  • How did he really live?
  • What did he really mean?
  • What really happened between him, his disciples, and the world around him?

Just as the disciples did, we will follow where he goes. We will listen as he speaks. We will marvel at his miracles. We will doubt. We will be confused. We will gain clarity. We will be afraid. We will be encouraged.  We will be cautious. We will be emboldened. We will be stretched. We will be comforted. And most of all…

WE WILL BE CHANGED!

KILLING JESUS

Killing Jesus Slider

The most heinous and undeserved death sentence in history was carried out on Jesus Christ. Why did this happen? How could a man who had no fault that could be found in him wind up beaten and hung on a cross? What were the motivations behind this horrible action? And even more importantly, why did it NEED to happen? These questions and more will be explored in this series, the 2nd part of “The Chronicles of Jesus” series. This series will unfold between March 30 and Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014.

WHOLE

whole sliderPerhaps the most important topic we have ever addressed at SCC begins February 2, 2014

Why is it that with all the preaching, teaching, prayer and Bible study…

• there are still almost as many divorces among Christians as the secular world?
• Friendships end of seemingly innocent disagreements
• Families flail about looking for something that will pull them together but can’t quite pull it off
• We feel like we have to tiptoe around each other in church and small groups
• We have such a hard time saying “I’m sorry”
• We feel free to criticize and belittle others
• We still have a problem with pornography?
• Christians increasingly participate in premarital and extramarital sex
• We have teenagers and adults who commit suicide in increasing numbers?
• We feel like we can’t truly be honest about who we are with each other?
• Pretending feels safer than honesty and vulnerability
• We continue to see high profile Christian leaders crash and burn and do really stupid things?

Surely this isn’t the Christianity that Jesus desires for us to live is it? Surely this isn’t the good news and the hope of the gospel is it? But it IS what far too many Christians experience, and the world witnesses.

We’ll tackle what we believe is the key missing piece in changing all this…

It is IMPOSSIBLE to be spiritually mature while being emotionally immature. We’ll show you the link and work through the answers during this game-changing series.

the Chronicles of Jesus

Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia….they are all stories that are so good and so large, they have to be told in trilogies or more. Sunday, November 17, SCC will kick off a trilogy of the greatest story ever told…The Chronicles of Jesus. The first part of the trilogy will be “Birthing Jesus!”

In Birthing Jesus, we will explore numerous elements surrounding the why, the where, the how of the arrival of Jesus along with the important people of the story.

Don’t miss the first installment.Come know HIM better than you ever have!

I Am Second

You’ve dreamed…you’ve pushed…you’ve pursued…and yet, it still never seems like it’s quite enough. The secret to a successful life isn’t coming in FIRST…it’s coming in SECOND. Join us at SCC for a brand new series beginning Sunday, September 22, and hear from famous and not-so-famous people sharing their stories of how they went from being first, to being second…and how that has changed their lives for the better…and for eternity.

Summer 2013 – God’s Top 10

Everybody loves TOP TEN lists….We’re always curious what the top 10 for anything is. SCC invites you to join us as we investigate God’s Top 10 list.  And if it’s God’s Top 10, then it must be truly important.  In fact, we believe it’s the most important list you will read this summer.  So we hope your natural curiosity and interest in Top 10 lists will motivate you to come find out what God says about His Top 10.

Easter 2013 – From Finish to Start (the end is only the beginning)

On the cross, Jesus said, “It is finished”.  On Easter morning, he rose from the grave and started something completely new.  He was dead, and now he was alive.  This is a question that most people have, but few ever ask, “What comes after I die?  What happens after death?”  Is it really the finish or is it the start of something else?

Most people have some idea of a life that comes after death, but few really know for sure what that might look like.  So what if all your ideas about forever are wrong?  What if eternity isn’t about sitting on a cloud playing a harp, but something FAR more compelling?  What if the Easter story is actually even bigger than you know.  What if the answers to these questions can change your life NOW….TODAY?  Isn’t it worth an investment of a few weeks to get the answers to the questions you’ve always been curious about?  We’ll begin to do just that on Easter Sunday.  Arrive early to enjoy some free coffee and treats from Trefzger’s Bakery.  Our treat!

UNstuck

Feeling Stuck? Not sure how what to do? You don’t want to miss this important series that helps change all that. We’ll address several of the key areas of our lives where we often find ourselves stuck…Faith, Family, Friendships, Money, Work, and our Past.  UNSTUCK – a new series beginning Sunday, Feb 10th, at SCC. It’s time to move beyond a life of just OK.  Service starts at 10:00. Please join us!!!

We all know the stories… guys that started companies in their garages that turn out to be worth billions…. women whose lives go from one perfect moment to another.   They are the ones who seemed to have charmed lives.

But for most of us, life can often go from one disappointment to another.  How do you deal with life when it’s not turning out the way you thought it would?  How do you keep moving on when the realities of life are breaking your heart and your spirit?  What do you do when God doesn’t show up the way you thought he would?

Join us for this uplifting, life-restoring series beginning on Easter Sunday.

fan: an enthusiastic admirer.

In the Gospels, Jesus never seemed too interested in fans.

Is that how you define your relationship with Him? An “enthusiastic admirer”? Close enough to Jesus to get the benefits but not so close to require sacrifice?

He was looking for followers. Not just any follower though, but a…

completely. committed. follower.

How would things change if you lived as Jesus lived, and loved the way He loved?

Maybe you’re ready to join the hundreds of people who have stepped across a line and said:

i am not a fan.

Anticipation….it’s both exciting and frustrating.

Christmas is just around the corner and kids (and more than a few adults) can hardly wait. We have hints all around us that let us know it’s coming… the calendar says so, the stores say so, the weather says so… All of it points to what is coming.

What if there were no signs? What if there were but you couldn’t figure them out.? What a terrible thing that would be to miss. Fortunately, we have a bunch of signs that tell us what to look for about the coming of Christmas… and more importantly the Christ of Christmas…and we’ll explore them to help us not only anticipate with excitement the arrival of Christmas, but not be frustrated by missing it.

This special Christmas series begins December 4th at 10:00 am. We hope you’ll join us as our guest and bring the whole family during this most wonderful time of the year

Ever found yourself between a rock and a hard place?   That might not be a big deal if you have a few sticks of dynamite and a couple million bucks…but for most of us, that’s a place NO ONE wants to find themselves.  But what if that’s exactly where you SHOULD be?  What if some of the most important lessons in your life could only be processed in just such a situation?  Welcome to real life…where thankfully there is a real God to help you deal with real challenges.  We’ll take a few weeks to look at the story of the Israelites with the Red Sea ahead of  them and the Egyptian Army behind them with no way out (Exodus 14).  These lessons can change forever the way you look at the hard circumstances of life.  Join us for the RED SEA RULES:

  1. Realize that God means for you to be where you are.
  2. Be more concerned for God’s glory than your relief.
  3. Acknowledge the enemy, but keep your eyes on the Lord.
  4. PRAY!
  5. Stay calm and confident, and give God time to work.
  6. When unsure, just take the next logical step by faith.
  7. Envision God’s enveloping presence.
  8. Trust God to deliver in His own unique way.
  9. View your current crisis as a faith builder for the future.
  10. Don’t forget to praise him.

We love mysteries…but we love answers even more.  In the absence of answers, we are often left with nagging questions and a debilitating lack of clarity to move forward.  God knows this.  And while there is “great mystery” about who he really is…. what he is up to…. and our place in all of that, he did provide us with clues that lead to surprising answers….and those answers can change EVERYTHING.

On September 18th, SCC will begin to hunt down these clues to unwrap the great mystery of God.  You will make some amazing discoveries and your faith will be energized in ways you have never experienced.  Come join the hunt for a God that is bigger and better than you thought and a faith that exceeds your expectations.

For many people, summer is a time when thoughts turn to “love”. It’s a time when engaged women get excited about being a “June bride”. It’s a time when young men become very interested in the allure of the opposite sex. It’s a time when the temperature goes up and so does our amorous nature.

The Bible speaks of love often and repeatedly…that roughly translates into “a lot”. So what does the Bible have to say about love? What are the key aspects of love we need to learn, understand and apply during this time of year? What does the Bible have to say about love that affects your life, your home, your plans, and your future? We’ll check it out during June. We invite you to check it out with us.

We think you’ll love it :)

In 2003, a young teen-age girl by the name of Bethany Hamilton had her arm bit off by a shark while surfing.  Since then, she has not only resumed her life, she has excelled.  Her story is a tribute to the power of God and faith in her life to overcome difficult odds and not only survive…but thrive.  You can too!   Join us at Second Chance Church this Easter Sunday to be challenged and inspired by her story and God’s story and find your own story in it.  Let’s catch a wave…

  • April 24 – Catching God’s Wave For Your Life
  • May 1 – Searching for Something Bigger
  • May 8 –  Raising a Soul-Surfer
  • May 15 –  Trusting God in the Impact Zone
  • May 22 –  Getting Back in the Water
  • May 29 –  Catching the Ride of Your Life

* There will be a special 4-week discussion group on Sunday nights at SCC beginning May 1st.  This will be a great opportunity for you to meet some new friends and work through lessons learned.

The words we use to describe December and the Christmas holiday are a mixture of excitement and exhaustion. But we believe that this month was meant to bring us to a place of peace… a place of family… a place of joy. If the Christmas season has become more exhaustion than peace and joy, would you be willing to invest a couple of Sunday mornings with us to recapture the true magic of Christmas? Would you be willing to allow yourself to experience the joy of family…of coming home? You’ll find it here. Please be our guest for this very special series about a very special time of year.

This series will begin Sunday, December 12th and continue through December 26th.  Come early to enjoy some of our great coffee and pastry…it’s just like coming home!

We’ve all heard that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Now we’re being told that men are like waffles and women are like spaghetti.

If that’s true, then what’s the right recipe? What are the right ingredients for a good man? How do we know when a woman is everything a woman should be? How do we know when families are functioning properly?

It’s time to go back to the recipe book… the Bible.

We’ll spend the next couple of months looking at the original recipe and hearing from the Master Chef.

If you’ll join us for a refreshing meal each week during this series, we’re confident that not only will you have a deeper appreciation than ever for these amazing creations, but you’ll have the tools you need to recreate them in your own kitchen.

The winds of change are blowing in our world.  In fact, change seems to be coming from every direction….and at warp speed.  How do we become strong enough to weather the storms that are raging around us?  How do we keep hope when so much seems hopeless?

  • Unemployment is holding steady at nearly 10% (13% in Peoria) Under-employment hovers near 18%
  • Personal debt and bankruptcy is sky-rocketing
  • Marriages and families are falling apart
  • Loneliness and depression is rampant
  • People and institutions we thought we could count on have let us down

It is truly overwhelming.  What do you do to maintain a sense of courage and hope in such an environment?  We suggest that the smartest thing any of us can do is to turn to God and learn from him and learn his ways.  Nothing in this world can stabilize us like the truth and the peace of God.   But there is one little sticking point… how can you have  confidence in what you don’t know or don’t understand?  Roots is a journey of discovery.  We will explore the deep truths of our well-worn faith that gives us strength for today and hope for the future.  Here’s the lineup:

  • April 4 –  Jesus Christ; Act 1 (The First Coming)
  • April 11 – Jesus Christ; Act 2 (The Second Coming..Rapture?)
  • April 18 – The Afterlife (What REALLY happens?)
  • April 25 – God (Who is he and where did he come from?)
  • May 3 – The Holy Spirit (Sounds a little spooky… is it?)
  • May 9 – The Bible (Why should we believe it?)
  • May 16 – Creation (Where did we come from?)
  • May 23 – Good and Evil (Does it exist?  Who decides?)
  • May 30—Salvation (Signed, Sealed, Delivered….Or Not?)
  • June 6 – Sanctification (What?… We’ll explain)
  • June 13 – The Church (What’s the big deal?)
